Meet Dunaliella salina
Dunaliella salina is a highly halophilic (salt-loving) microalga found in brackish and hypersaline water. Besides chlorophylls a and b, it accumulates very high levels of carotenoids, mainly β-carotene, which has great economic value in dietary supplements and strong antioxidant properties.
The cell’s shape depends on its environment. It reproduces both sexually and asexually, and a typical growth cycle runs for about 30 days.
